…I had a full time job cornering the market on being self-absorbed and short-sighted. I am truly amazed that no one killed me just for being an obnoxious git.
Somehow, in complete defiance of the karmic laws of the universe, I have managed to produce four kids who have avoided making the same mistakes I did. Or at least they haven’t made them yet. I’m sure they’re finding out ways to make their own mistakes, but I can guarantee you they’re far more likable than I was at their respective ages.
Abby is turning 23 today, and she is deep into her wonderful life as she heads to grad school.
When I was pregnant with her, all those years ago, I was doing the name-picking-out thing and I was stumped on a girl name. One night I woke from a sound sleep and shook her dad awake.
“Abby. If this is a girl, I want to call her Abby. Because an Abby will be smart, and kind, and gracious, and beautiful.”
I am delighted to know that I called it in one. I am humbled that I get to be her Mom.

This is just a beautiful message for a lovely young woman who is lucky enough to have a wonderful mother who always lets her children be who they were always meant to be. Congratulations to both Abby and her mom.
