The best of yesterday was this man:
His name is Charles Wilhelm, and he’s part of a mystery I was able to solve for my dad, using genealogy.
Luckily for my sleuthing mission, he was a Big Name back in the Midwest back in the day, and so I was able to figure out part of a puzzle in my dad’s memory of being a young boy. Was ‘Uncle Charlie’ his father’s brother? Or this guy?
We’ll see. But one of the cool things about putting together your family tree is that the stories your parents told you come to life when you see the historical record that supports them.

Hi Bess, Lucy told me about your blog. Your Dad did have an Uncle Charlie Stocking, who was George Stocking Seniors brother. Charles Wilhem was married to Mary Stocking who was your Dad’s grandfather, Frederick Stocking’s sister. So I guess that makes Charles Wilhelm your Dad’s Great Uncle. We have them documented on Ancestry, so you should take a look at Higgins Kids.

Thank you for reading!
If you look at my ancestry tree, you’ll see that I have both Charlies. Dad doesn’t know which Charlie is the Uncle Charlie he remembers. I’m hoping the picture I found clears that up.

Your dad is a great guy. It will be interesting to find out which Uncle Charlie is memorable to your father and why.
