Saturday night, or Sunday morning, or at least when I was asleep, the country sprang forward, which is what we do on the rebound from falling back last autumn.
Most of you ran around changing your clocks and then experienced the functional result of losing an hour of sleep.
In Arizona, or at least in most parts of Arizona, we do not engage in this ritual. We sleep in, and our clocks never change. The biggest inconvenience we suffer (and it is no small hassle, letmetellyouinternetz) is having to remember how many hours we’re different from the east coast and just what the heck time it is in California again?
In the past few years though, our blissful slumber has been disturbed as we woke to find that ‘smart’ appliances in our home, not knowing that they lived in Arizona and thus did not have to fuss with such trivia, slavishly obeyed their Microsoft masters and changed their time in accordance with the Time Zone Overlords.
Which causes no end of hassle on our end, as we wander the house and wonder…what the heck time IS it? Is the DVR ‘smart’ or ‘dumb’? Which appliance should I believe? Did T-Mobile set my cell phone ahead? Back?
Craig’s alarm clock is one of these ‘smart’ bombs, and, like, well…clockwork it sprang forward with great alacrity Sunday morning. I woke up, noted the time, noted the light streaming in our windows, and said, “This can’t be right.”
And of course it wasn’t. Because the ‘smart’ clock isn’t so smart…it doesn’t know it’s in Arizona, and so could stay determinedly ‘un-sprung.’ I resolved to do what I normally do when this happens: wait until Craig gets up, and sit down and fiddle with the time zones until I find the one that matches what time I think it’s supposed to be.
In the meantime, Craig wakes up. He notes the time, and also the fact that we’re going to be late for an appointment. I say, no…the clock sprang forward and it’s really an hour earlier.
As he rolls out of bed he exclaims, “That clock is amazing! It always sets itself within a couple of hours, every single time.”
Well, no. We know what’s really amazing here.

When I lived in Indianapolis they didn’t observe daylight savings either and I loved it! Although dealing with other timezones was hard. It was also confusing when I went to Lake Powell.. the marina is on Arizona time but the cellphones would register Utah time on the lake.
